What this job actually is
A pharma company runs a Phase-3 trial in 200 hospitals across 30 countries. Each hospital enters patient data into an EDC system (Medidata Rave, Veeva CDMS, Oracle InForm). You design the form, write the edit checks, query the bad data, lock the database when the trial ends, and hand a clean dataset to biostatistics. Without CDM, the trial cannot file with FDA.

Demand grows because someone has to verify AI output.
AI cleans data faster but FDA submissions require human-attested audit trails on every edit. The job shifts toward AI-output review and risk-based monitoring. CDM is one of the safer roles because regulator rules favour human accountability.

Helpful, not required. SQL basics + Excel power-user is enough at L1. EDC build roles do need scripting.
Why does CDM pay more than PV?
Smaller talent pool (more tech-leaning), higher cost of training each new hire (system access, GCP cert), and FDA exposure on database lock raises the floor.
Veeva or Medidata: which to learn first?
Medidata Rave still owns ~55% of trials, Veeva is gaining fast (~25%). Learn Rave first; Veeva is easier to pick up second.
Travel to sponsor sites?
Rare at L1-L3. Lead CDA roles see sponsor visits (1-2/quarter, mostly virtual now).
Can a B.Sc Life Sciences fresher get in?
Yes. CDM hiring is more about analytical aptitude than degree title. M.Pharm helps for EDC build, B.Sc is fine for L1 review.
