What this job actually is
A US doctor sees a patient and writes a clinical note. You read that note and translate every diagnosis to ICD-10-CM, every procedure to CPT, every drug to HCPCS. Insurance pays the hospital based on your codes. Mis-code by one digit and the claim gets denied. India runs 60% of US RCM coding because labour is cheap and English is good.
Why India keeps hiring for it
US healthcare keeps growing, the number of US coders is shrinking, and US hospitals offshore aggressively. NASSCOM puts India healthcare BPM at $7-8B with coding the largest sub-segment.

Who fits: Any life-sciences graduate (B.Pharm, B.Sc Nursing, BPT, BHMS, BDS, B.Sc Life Sciences). Anatomy + medical terminology background helps. Commerce graduates can do AR/denials but not coding.

Frequently asked, plainly answered
Do I need CPC before applying?
No for trainee roles, yes by Y1. Most BPOs sponsor your CPC attempt after probation; passing it gets you the L2 hike.
WFH or office?
Most coders work hybrid (3 days office) post-probation. Senior coders (Y3+) at MNC accounts often get fully WFH.
Is night shift mandatory?
No. Coding is async (you read charts, not call patients). AR caller roles are night shift; coding is mostly India-day.
How does pay compare to PV?
Coding starts ~₹0.5-1 LPA below PV at L1, but with CPC the Y3 band is comparable. Specialty coders (surgery, IP) match or beat PV by Y5.
Career ceiling?
Senior auditor / RCM lead at ₹15-22 LPA in India; ₹35-50 LPA equivalent if you shift to US payer-side compliance.
